Kostrzewa ametystowa jest bardzo ozdobną trawą ze względu na pokrój tj. tworzenie gęstych kęp oraz zabarwienie. Rośnie silniej niż Festuca glauca. Cienkie, przewieszające się, nitkowate liście koloru niebiesko-zielonego osiągające długość do 30 cm tworzą kępy o wysokości ok. 30 cm. Zwisające wiechy pojawiają się od maja do czerwca i wówczas roślina osiąga wysokość ok. 50 cm. Fantastycznie komponuje się z niskimi krzewami typu irga, pięciornik, karłowymi krzewami iglastymi lub tulipanami botanicznymi. Nadaje się do wysadzania na skalniakach, w ogrodach naturalistycznych. Doskonale nadaje się do zazieleniania dachów. Najlepiej rośnie na stanowiskach słonecznych, na glebach lekkich i suchych.
