Łubin to bylina o liściach dłoniasto złożonych, składających się z 13-15 lancetowatych listków, które z wierzchu są nagie, a od spodu delikatnie owłosione. W zależności od odmiany, kwiaty zebrane w długie kłosowate grona mają barwę białą, żółtą, pomarańczową, różową, czerwoną, fioletową. Często spotyka się łubiny o kwiatach dwubarwnych. Bylina osiąga wysokość 60-90 cm i kwitnie od czerwca do lipca. Kwiaty nadają się do cięcia, ale nie są zbyt trwałe w wazonie. Po kwitnieniu zaleca się przyciąć całe rośliny, co pobudza je do wzrostu i ponownego kwitnienia. Nie przycięte po kwitnieniu zanikają. Łubin nadaje się na rabaty, do parków i ogrodów naturalistycznych. Lubi stanowiska ciepłe i nasłonecznione, gleby suche do średnio wilgotnych, dobrze zdrenowane piaszczyste i próchniczne. Nie lubi stanowisk wapnowanych. Przy zbyt wysokiej zawartości wapnia w glebie liście żółkną, a rośliny stają się krótkowieczne.
