Kosaciec niski dorasta do 35 (40) cm wysokości i charakteryzuje się wczesnym terminem kwitnienia od kwietnia do maja. W ogrodach spotyka się różne jego odmiany, które różnią się barwą kwiatów (od białego, żółtego, różowego do fioletowego) oraz żyłkowaniem. Pędy kwiatostanowe, na których wyrastają 1-2 kwiaty, po przekwitnięciu należy wyciąć u ich nasady, aby uniknąć tworzenia nasion, które roślinę osłabiają.
